The project focused on five stormwater catchment areas, laying over 15,000 square meters of jute matting to cover the planting areas, planting approximately 160,000 tube stock and implementing vegetation management plans (VMPs). Our team worked closely with the local council to ensure the project was successful and met the objectives.
Challenge
Weather, Invasive Plants, and Timelines
The project was challenging. Our team was up against inclement weather conditions and had many wet days and some completely rained-out days. They had to implement vegetation management plans (VMPs) to deal with many invasive plants, and a strict timeline had to be followed. Additionally, the area was prone to flooding, so the team had to ensure the installed plants were suitably flood-resistant. The jute matting also had to be installed correctly to withstand the heavy increase in water flows.
Solution
VMPs, Flood-resistant Species, and Collaboration
To overcome the challenges, the team worked hard to implement VMPs and managed the area to ensure invasive plants were removed before planting. Flood-resistant plant species were also chosen, and the team provided the plants were well-covered with jute to protect them from floodwaters. The team also worked closely with the local council to ensure the project adhered to regulations.
Results
Outstanding Planting Regeneration, Flood Resilience, and Habitat Restoration
The project was a tremendous success, and the results were outstanding. The plants have thrived and survived the floods in 2021-22, a testament to their flood resistance. The planted area is now more resilient to flooding, and the bush has been regenerated, providing a habitat for native animals. The local council and the community were delighted with the outcome, and the community now uses the parks. Our team is proud to have been a part of this project.
